What application on my computer should I use to modify my notes? I used Word and when I went to sync with dropbox I get an error: DO_HYDRATE_DROPBOX_NOTES
It is saved as .markdown and will reopen in word.

You're best off using just a plain text editor. If you're in Windows, then Notepad should do the trick. If you want more functionality, give Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus-plus.org/) a look. I haven't used Windows in a few years, but it was a pretty decent application back then. I imagine there's something in Word that lets you save as text, but I can't be too sure, so I'd recommend Notepad++ or Notepad. There are obviously paid applications you could try, but I'm not sure what I'd recommend. I used Homesite on a PC, but I don't believe that's developed any more.

If you're on a Mac, then you can use TextEdit, or look into some of the other text editors. I'm hopelessly devoted to Textmaete (http://macromates.com), but nvAlt (http://brettterpstra.com/project/nvalt/) is a Notational Velocity port I'd probably look into otherwise.

It appears that the DO_HYDRATE_DROPBOX_NOTES error can occur when the *.markdown file contains characters with code values outside of the normal ASCII range (e.g., 128-255 decimal) rather than Unicode. This is often the case with stylized forms of quotes and m-dash. If Unicode values are used instead, it seems to sync fine.

On my XP machine, I've set the .markdown file type to point to Wordpad, which is a little more capable than notepad. This seems to work pretty well.

On the Mac I've been using MultMarkDown Composer (from the app store).

It seems pretty good so far, is reasonably priced and it has a great sidebar that shows an outline
of your document headings that you can click on for fast navigation.

It reformats/tidies the metadata by default which upsets Trunk Notes on sync.
Change its settings before you let it rip on a Trunk doc:

"tabs are 4 spaces" == off
"align metadata with tabs" == off

I've switched to MarkDownNote (iPad and Mac, £2.49 each).

This app is ideal for me as a markdown newbie since it's split into two panes:

Left: raw text edit window
Right: live preview of the rendered markdown

I've done some basic tests with both versions and had no problems with Trunk.

Best to use a plain text editor, like what's been previously mentioned. Open the *.markdown file as plain text or ignore rich text commands, as in the case of TextEdit ( Mac OSX ). Word will save a file with any extension you give it, but it will still add unseen characters, code, that when saved, will be an issue for TN. Editing text in the web browser works well, WiFi Sharing. Though they offer cut & paste, search & replace is lacking

Actually, here is a partial list of additional characters within the 128-255 range that TN also chokes on: 150, 151, 153, 155, 157, 160, 198, 199, 210, 212, 214, 216, 225, 227, 229, 231, 232, 234, 236. I first noticed the choking when I discovered characters like the ellipsis `…` (133) and smart quotes `‘` (145), `’` (146), `“` (147), and `”` (148) having to be eradicated from my imports. I am trying to create a turnkey integration of TN content with my Simplenote content and my Evernote content. So I eagerly await a fix. Thank you.
